For over 20 years Eileen Howard’s performances with jazz groups, big bands, and on the stage have delighted audiences. She is an exceptionally versatile performer with styles ranging from jazz to Latin to rock to blues to R&B.

Mentored by veterans Clifford Murphy and Claude Brown, she cut her teeth on jazz by sitting-in at Murphy’s Jazz Club and studying with Maryanne Russo, a prominent jazz vocalist and former singer with the Nelson Riddell and the Jack Runyon Orchestras, and with Scott Shepherd, a jazz and musical theater composer. Soon she began singing with Satin and Brass, a contemporary big band. and had gigs with The Murphy’s jazz trio and the Jack Runyon Orchestra.

To define Bill's musical style in one word, this would be "bop" because it traditionally has moved between bebop and hardbop, and sometimes with elements of contemporary jazz and even classical music. In general, the most important contribution of Bill Carter, is integrating jazz language with theology and the Christian faith, all through of a very creative and elegant sense of this music as an art form. To date, he have recorded seven sacred jazz albums: Faith in a New Key, Dancing Day, Fragile Incarnation, Stand On Your Head, Jazz According to John (with biblical storyteller Dennis Dewey), Welcome Home (with vocalist Warren Cooper), and Psalms Without Words. Rare is it to find modern music that pinpoints the middle ground between a respect for past greats and a boldness to pave tomorrow. This is, quite modestly, the definition of The Reign of Kindo. Citing influences from Dave Brubeck to Ben Folds to Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto to John Mayer, there's not a degree of pomposity in this sound, just an honesty in the group's craft to blend such diverse influences into an identity so refreshing, unique, and universally personable.

The band formed in late 2006 from the remaining members of This Day & Age, adding a new member, Jeffrey Jarvis. On August 21, 2007, the band released their first record, an EP entitled simply The Reign of Kindo EP. The EP was a regional sales success, reaching #5 on the Billboard Middle Atlantic Heatseekers chart. In January 2008, they began recording for their first full-length record, entitled Rhythm, Chord & Melody and released through 111 Records on August 19, 2008.

On December 30, 2009, Candyrat put out the first Youtube video of The Reign of Kindo performing the song "Just Wait." It became an immediate hit as within the first 24 hour period it was one of the most highly rated and commented videos among Youtube's music category of videos.

Alejandro Neciosup Acuña aka Alex Acuña (born December 12, 1944) is a Peruvian Afro-Cuban jazz drummer and percussionist.

Born in Pativilca, Peru, Acuña played in local bands from the age of ten, and moved to Lima as a teenager. At the age of eighteen he joined the band of Perez Prado, and in 1967 he moved to Puerto Rico. In 1974 Acuña moved to Las Vegas, working with artists such as Elvis Presley and Diana Ross, and the following year he joined the jazz-fusion group Weather Report, appearing on the albums Black Market and Heavy Weather. Acuña left Weather Report in 1978, and became a session musician in California, recording and playing live with (amongst many others) Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Ella Fitzgerald, Jim Walker (musician), Chick Corea, Whitney Houston, Plácido Domingo, Phil Keaggy, Sergeant Petter, Sam Phillips, former Weather Report bandmates Wayne Shorter and Joe Zawinul, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Beck, Roberta Flack, U2, and Al Jarreau. He can be found on recordings by musicians as culturally diverse as Lee Ritenour, Peter Gabriel, Johnny Clegg, Robbie Robertson and Jackson Browne.

In the 1980s Acuna also recorded and toured with the Christian jazz band Koinonia, which featured session musicians Abraham Laboriel, Justo Almario, Hadley Hockensmith, Harland Rogers, and Bill Maxwell. It was a live shot capturing the very first moments when Abraham Laboriel and James Lomenzo of Megadeth, received their custom built guitars. What an amazing jam session. The unbelievable location belonged to Randy Fullmer, the owner of Wyn Guitars. It was shot with a Canon 5Dmk2 with ML firmware. On board sound with a Juicedlink CX231 pre-amp. Canon 50mm 1.4 and 24-70mm L 2.8.

For nearly 40 years, the Jazz Ministry of Saint Peter's Church has been the spiritual home for jazz in New York City. Started by Pastor John Garcia Gensel out of his passion for the music and as part of his ministry at Advent Lutheran Church on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, the Jazz Ministry settled into its permanent home at Saint Peter’s Church in 1966. Since then, the international jazz community has defined Saint Peter’s as the “Jazz Church”.

Sometimes, there are excellent projects that don't have good disclosure. From occasional projects, focused on a single album/appearance, to musicians that don't have a way for make known your projects beyond their friends circle. One of this are the Atrium Jazz Band, the first brazilian gospel Big Band.

Atrium Jazz Band is a project originally from ABC Paulista, Brazil; that arises from the desire of a christian musicians, united by friendship and christian fellowship, to find their own musical language. Doing rehearsals and performances in the worship atrium of the church, they sought this language for three years, to finish with the release of their only recording: "Atrium Jazz Band" in 1996, an interesting gospel jazz album, which contain various arrangements of christian hymns, and original compositions of the band. No doubt that the genius of this brazilian band, is that using the format of traditional american big band, it converge gospel music with swing, bebop and different brazilian styles as bossa nova, samba, among others; and of course, without neglecting the influences of each musician. In words of flugelhornist, Sérgio Oliveira:

The apparent eclecticism was not intentional, but occurred naturally and represents, in a sense, our influences, our temperament, our excitement and experience.

We had the privilege of having some very talented musicians, such as trumpetists Severo Raimundo de Oliveira known as Pelezinho, Raimundo Pires de Oliveira known as Quinzinho; saxophonist Sílvio Depieri, and drummer Lenilson Silva known as Simonal.

Three of the most influential bassists of the secular music in Brazil had the idea for this project: show their instrument, the bass, and its beautiful! Alberto Continentino (on the right) has worked with Ed Motta (singer of funk and soul styles). Andre Neiva (between) is touring with Jorge Vercillo (a Brazilian very gifted singer, composer and player). He has also worked with some Christian Brazilian singers like Carlinhos Felix and Eyshila. André Rodrigues (on the right) has worked with MPB4, Gilson Peranzzetta, Leo Gandelman among others Brazilian musicians. There is no doubt this CD is worth listening!

CB: With all the religions in the world, why Christianity?

VC: Wow, that’s a great question. One thing that I’m apt to think is that God came to me and sought me in a sense. Because see, I grew up in a Catholic background, although I was not what you might call a “GOOD, PRACTICING” Catholic, it seems as though in my younger years of childhood growing up I believed in Jesus and what I knew about him. Of course there was no scripture teaching so that was all really a mystery to me. And as I grew into adulthood I remember, I would like to say, for maybe ten years, I’m just throwing a wild number out there, before I got saved in 1998, that I had gradually found myself seeking spiritual answers, reaching out to spiritual values and higher values and spirituality and had sort of racked my brain philosophically and coming up empty. I found myself bargaining with God and I realized a lot of things. Wanting to know answers. It’s real easy for us to come up with answers to satisfy ourselves and appease our curiosity. After a lot of questioning and searching I think that God had engineered these circumstances providentially to bring me to him and that led up to me going to Switzerland [where friends of Vinnie would lead him to Christ]. So, it wasn’t like a situation where I was “SHOPPING” and looked at a laundry list: “Buddhism, Hinduism, etc, oh Christianity – that one looks good.” (Laughs) So, it wasn’t really like that, although I had explored a lot of avenues and done quite a bit of research, so to speak. The way that the events actually happened: I found out that people had been praying for me. And again, after I had gone to Switzerland and after I had met the Lord and asked him to come into my life, I began to read scripture voraciously. So, on that level it provided me with all the answers. It provided me with all the answers on an intellectual cognizant level.

CB: So, you felt like God had sought you out, picked you and by reading the scripture it kind of ...

VC: Well, it substantiates things. And it did substantiate God seeking me and it answered that but also what I’m saying is that scripture will tell you, it will answer you on that level. It’s not just some emotional experience that you can’t quite identify. Or, that you come away with a lot of questions, you come up empty and it doesn’t make sense, it’s not like that. It will satisfy you intellectually, and when I say “it” I’m talking in terms of Christianity and I loathe to speak about it in terms of religion versus a relationship with the living God, but just for the sake of explanation and discussion that’s what I’ll say and as well as seeing that that void was filled, so also viscerally, emotionally, experientially, intellectually and cognizant – it’s all those levels, you know. So, in retrospect now that I’m looking at it, and I would always say that God had His hand on me, because of what I’ve learned in scriptures and because I can correlate that with what actually happened in my own life that led up to it and that it continues. It’s like you go back and look and the scripture tells you that – you experience these things before you even get to scripture, then you read scripture and it tells you that. And you go, “WOW”. That was my experience as well. And like I say, philosophically I was coming up empty. It just reminded of dead end stuff. It’s like you put a pair of sneakers in the clothes dryer and they just keep bouncing off the walls. It just never gets to anywhere. I just found at the end of the day philosophically it’s a great intellectual exercise. But, a lot times I find, more often than not, you’re beating your head against the wall and trying to come up with the ultimate answers and it’s that thing like “I’VE GOT IT, I KNOW WHAT IT IS, I, I, ME, I KNOW, I’LL COME UP WITH ALL THE ANSWERS BECAUSE I’VE GOT A MIND AND A BRAIN AND I CAN FIGURE THIS OUT AND IF I CAN’T THEN I’M SURE NIETZSCHE WILL TELL ME, OR I’M SURE VOLTAIRE WILL TELL ME OR PLATO” and that’s not to denigrate any of these people in a sense. Our western thought largely stems from what Thales, Aristotle and Locke in terms of the thought processes and logic, but there’s that BUT word, it all stops short in terms of a lot of philosophical factions and philosophers. I mean, it goes on and on and on through history. Like a guy comes along and says, “ Oh, we got a paroxysm here.” Then that sticks and everybody thinks that’s the end of the road. Then 100 years later somebody else comes along and says “Nope”, here comes Immanuel Kant, “Oh no, no, no, hang on a second here” and everybody says, gee wiz why didn’t I think about that for the last 150 years? Or why didn’t WE think of that. You mean for three hundred years we thought this? Well, nobody’s been able to do that for the last two thousand years with the word of God. People tried and they do it all the time. The enemy is a crafty fellow but he’s not crafty enough. We have a promise and the Bible tells us that it’s going to get to the point where he may be able to deceive even the very ELECT. Then Christ will return again. That’s all kind of eschatology. It's hard to speculate. That’s a little tangential from what we’re talking about right now. But, they all factor into reasons for me. So, on ALL those levels I just SAW IT … ya know, Jesus is the truth and the light and the way. There's no falsehood in what He said. There just isn't. I could go on and on and on and on and expound about it on a lot of levels but I think I've encapsulated it. There are a lot of reasons I believe but I think this sums it up.

ALEX ACUNA - Turning Challenges into Opportunities (Interview)

DFJ: What was the experience that brought you to the Lord? AA: Since I was a little kid, about 9 years old, I established a relationship with God. And I used to go to a private place on a mountain near my hometown in Peru, South America. And I would talk to Him. I remember I would ask Him many things. You see, I mainly used to play soccer when I was a little kid but was also already playing drums. So I asked the team to come to my house to play drums. There were about 22 on the team, but no one knew how to play an instrument. So I realized I must have something different. I had thought that playing drums was like playing soccer - which every kid played. I knew then that God gave me something else. That's when my relationship with him was established, which was Romans 8:16. (The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. NIV). I came to the US for the first time when I was 18. I was alone; I had no parents with me. I was playing with a Latin band and making a lot of money for about 9 months. Then I moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico for about 9 years, and started falling into a very worldly life. But all the while I still talked with God. About 5 Years later, living in southern California, I was very successful in the music business, but very empty inside. One morning at about 3 a.m., after I finished listening to a well known CD I had played on called "Heavy Weather" (Weather Report), I bowed down and told the Lord, "Wow, you've given me everything I've ever asked for since I was little" and the Lord answered me saying, "Yes, and now I know that you NEED me." The Lord told me, "Now that you are coming back to me, we can have the kind of relationship we had when you were little." So I received the Lord in my home and later, I declared my faith at Church on the Way, in Van Nuys, CA (then under the leadership of Sr. Pastor Jack Hayford). Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. Matt. 10:32 NIV. I've been serving at that church for more than 24 years now. It's been a beautiful journey. DFJ: That's wonderful Alex! Praise Jesus!!! The next question I wanted to ask you is: what is the biggest challenge you face as a Christian being in the music industry? AA: Well, I'll tell you, I don't really have a 'biggest' challenge. The beauty of being a Christian is that if we continue reading the Word and we continue praying we will be prepared for whatever challenges come to us. These are the two things that God wants from us, reading the Word and praying. First, if we read God's Word everyday, no one will be able to tell us anything different from what is written from His hand. Secondly, if we pray to God then we have direct communication with Him and have a relationship with Him and He will give us what to say when any challenge comes and send us wisdom to understand His Word and to understand the ways He speaks. When we practice these things, the challenges decrease. One of the greatest men after Jesus was the apostle Paul. When Paul was with the Romans, he spoke like a Roman and when he was with the Greeks he spoke Greek and when he was with the Jews he spoke Jewish. God gave in His word a lot of discernment and wisdom and he prepared us to be in ANY PLACE. We are going to continue growing in knowledge of being more like Christ if we continue reading the Word and walking by it, walking by faith, walking by VICTORY! Going from Glory to Glory!! BUT, if we don't do these things, pray and stay in the Word, THEN the world becomes a challenge to a Christian because they are not fully equipped. When we are fully equipped by the word of GOD there is no challenge. That's why God wants some of us to be in the secular business so we can be a light, we can be salt, we can make a difference, we can be an inspiration to them - not only musically, but spiritually. Alex then gave me an example of a situation he was in where he was asked to be on a board for a musical awards group and in a meeting of this group some of the members were making fun of Christianity, Alex didn't say anything .. he just continued to pray to God to give him the opportunity to share the Lord, with POWER, so they could know what knowing the Lord was all about, so they could see the Lord IN Alex. Well, the meeting broke and they went to lunch. During the lunch a Christian friend of Alex's came in and they greeted each other with "Praise God!" And the friend asked Alex "Are you still doing Christian music?" And Alex explained that he was doing a lot of different projects and by then everyone at the table was looking at Alex. And Alex said "You know, Christianity is in the heart and I have my relationship, direct line with Jesus, with my Lord … but I'm not a religious person." And then the people asked Alex to explain further about what he was talking about and everyone at the table stopped eating and started listening to what he was saying. Alex explained to them that he doesn't judge people, God teaches us to love everyone, walk by faith, but that LOVE is the most important thing. Then, the attitude of everyone at the table started to change about Christianity. In this way the challenge was turned into an OPPORTUNITY, so there really was no challenge.] AA: So, that's it! THE CHALLENGES TURN INTO OPPORTUNITIES!! Opportunities to let them know about JESUS.

Quarenta e três anos de idade, 38 dedicados à música. Este é Carlos Nascimento Tomati, mais conhecido como o 'guitarrista do Jô'. O que poucos sabem é que a vida de Tomati além do talk show ruma horizontes muito mais amplos. Seu flerte com o jazz, misturado às influências de música brasileira que o acompanham desde a infância - quando aos cinco anos ainda arranhava um Tom Jobim ao violão - deram sonoridade única às composições do artista. Mas nem só de poesias e harmonias sobrevive o ser humano.

No âmbito espiritual, o guitarrista, compositor, produtor e cantor fala abertamente de suas crenças e sua identificação com o Cristianismo - Tomati foi integrante do Katsbarnéa por um ano. Lord's Children, seu terceiro disco solo, lançado em 2005, é pouco conhecido. Uma pena, porque o álbum é - em minha opinião - o melhor instrumental cristão já lançado no Brasil e um dos melhores do meio secular.

O disco funde rock, samba, jazz e black music. As guitarras realmente parecem falar, expressando sentimentos que algumas letras não conseguiriam externar. Entretanto, se engana quem pensa que as músicas cantadas soam fracas em meio ao disco. Ao contrário, as letras versam sobre amizade entre irmãos e amor a Deus de maneira peculiar. Wayman Tisdale, who died on May, 15 at age 44, left behind a music legacy in addition to a sports one. Long after his basketball career, Wayman Tisdale put aside his days in the NBA and made room for his talent as a jazz bassist.
The son of a baptist minister, Tisdale often included inspiration gospel music, some of which were collaborations, including "Grateful" with Marvin Sapp, which is on Tisdale's Rebound project. He also worked with Jonathan Butler on "Sunday Best,'' which was on his 2006 CD Wayman Tisdale - Way Up. Tisdale also released 21 days, an all-gospel music project in 2003. (taken from Gospelrama)

It took Palmer some time to find his place when it came to choosing an instrument. Raised on the sounds of Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Motor City gospel greats like the Winans and the Clarks, Terrance showed a gift for music by age three. His mother, a pianist, had him try sax, trumpet, tuba, piano, and drums, which he settled on until his last year of high school, when the school’s resident bassist graduated. Palmer had been attracted to the sound of the bass—he even removed the top two strings from his acoustic guitar—so when he was asked to try filling the vacant bass chair, he agreed. “Something clicked immediately when I picked up the electric bass and started playing it, like this is where I was meant to be,” he recalls. Within two years he was backing no less than Dionne Warwick and Aretha Franklin at benefits, while landing in the band of legendary gospel composer/keyboardist Thomas Whitfield (replacing Mary J. Blige bassist and musical director Lanar Brantley).

Glenn Kaiser - Singin' the Blues (Interview)

Glenn Kaiser is one of the friendliest folks you could ever meet. Forget the weathered, leathered, tough-guy biker look. The Christian music veteran loves a good conversation, has an easy laugh, a twinkle in his eye, and generally makes a listener feel appreciated. So why's such a nice guy singing the blues? Because he's also brutally honest. And honestly, life sometimes stinks. Sin is rampant. Evil is everywhere. The blues are alive and well—whether we sing about it or not. The Bible is full of the blues; it's even got a book called Lamentations. Kaiser notes that 57 of the 150 Psalms are songs of lament; he even calls David the "original bluesman." And the 50-something Kaiser has lived the blues. He grew up in poverty. His parents divorced when he was a teen, shattering his life. He became the stereotypical drug-abusing rocker who once attempted suicide. But then he found Jesus and turned his life around. He joined Jesus People USA, where he became a leader and an ordained pastor in the inner-city ministry which focuses on reaching the poor, the down-and-out. Along the way, he founded the popular (and now defunct) rock group Resurrection Band, did a number of side and solo projects, and, more recently, formed the three-piece Glenn Kaiser Band, which specializes in playing the blues.
